Hilltop Encounter Process by Mr--Jack Hilltop Encounter Process by Mr--Jack
Process for the Knight / Wyrm piece.
Took about 3 and a half hours, final in PS is 4000px wide. Brushes are up here.

Colourwise riffing off Chris Rahn's wonderful Huntmaster of the Fells and also Petar Meseldzija's Legend of Steel Bashaw, which is fantastic.

Enjoy!
Final is here -

how do you decide, that an area is finished out enough?

Is it just a feeling? Is there a book?
I often have troubles making those decisions and would love to hear what you say..

Pretty much just a feeling, honestly; plus it really depends on how much time I want to spend on something >.< Especially something like this where I was doing these one a day, I try to make sure there's the enough detail in the focus of the image, and then everything else can be sort of worked on or not (and sometimes it's better to leave things simpler).
Unfortunately it's definitely just something you have to work out for yourself, and it's also something that goes with the sort of style you're trying to hit I think. (So luckily I work in a sort of painterly style where I get away with leaving things, haha)

I think I may have found myself a new idol. You're a true inspiration and I can't thank you enough for sharing your process, it's both very interesting to just look at but also really educative, and I love the fact that you're not really using custom effect brushes. I use mostly basic brushes myself, I feel like I have more control with them but a lot of people tell me I should start using custom brushes because you get prettier pictures and faster results. To me your work is proof that this isn't true. Thanks for that!

it would be awesome to see these as streaming videos :)

Is it hard to think of a good colour selection? you seem to know exactly what colour theme you are going to use in every piece, how long does it take you to think of which colours to use together to make the picture interesting?

2 Questions:

1) Are you painting on a single layer? If not, how many are you using and is each one specific towards a particular part of the painting?
2) Any layer effects such as Overlay, Multiply, etc. being used?

Thanks :)

:D

Nope, the final file in this case has 7 layers - (which I mostly create chronologically)
1 background sketch (1st stage of this gif)
2 first colours laid in, on a layer set to overlay (second stage here, before the actual painting starts)
3 most of the block-in painting on this layer, some details in the foreground are done at this stage
4 Polishing edges - most of the sky is on this layer, to define the edges around the dragon etc
5 other details are in here - the horse is finished and the knight is all on this layer, final details on the dragon's face
and 2 levels adjustment layers with varying masks, to tweak colours / contrast.

i noticed at the end you made changes to the backround without damaging your forground art, was that a mask, or all on the same layer?
